Never Overestimate the User

I just wrapped up helping a seemingly tech savvy user put the finishing touches on his new PC installation. All seemed to go as planned; his printer installed right, his data restored from his backup, and the programs he used for business worked fine. So just when I thought I had done a good deed and felt like I had helped someone with their technological needs who was going to make a positive impact on the world he asked me, “Hey um, I just got the new Call of Duty game for the Wii, I think I know the answer, but can I play that on the new PC?”

I should have told him yes.

  1. As far as stupid questions go, I don’t see that one as *that* bad. At least he didn’t insist it was possible because “some friend did it” – and technically, I suppose it is (nothing is impossible when it comes to software – it just may not be worth it).
You would just need to be a software genius and write a really good emulator, that also worked in the motion controls of the Wii (all said in done, just buying a PC version would be easier and a better experience).

  2. Well, at least he didn’t ask about playing a windows 95 game on windows 7 x64…. I should get a euro everytime someone asks me why that doesn’t work…. *rolleyes*

We’ve used the Wii mote in combination with an Arduino to replace a mouse and it worked fine, so all you would need is an emulator.

  3. Wii games work fine on the PC if you’ve got the right DVD drive. A specific model DVD drive from a certain company can read Wii discs and make an ISO image. A Wii and GC emulator for PC already exists to play said image.

The answer is best given as “Yes, but getting a PC version is easier.”
