I had this happen onetime with a list server and my out of office vacation response. I set up my response to start while I was on vacation and when I came back my response and a list serve had decided to play a game of infinite reply.
The new email system that we had did not do a reply once to sender vacation message, so it sent a reply to every message and the list serve automatically sent out a message every time someone went in a reply to its auto-notification email address telling you not to respond to the message. I had 20 megs worth non-html text messages of do-not reply to this email auto-replys from the list serve.
