    Heh.  I once had to go to bat with AppleCare over a client’s “guaranteed recertified” AirPort Extreme.  They couldn’t find the serial number for the device when it wasn’t working.

    I got the word directly from them that “sometimes they send out devices without checking them.”  This is proof.
