An IT Tech Has A Conversation With Their Mom [story]

Click on start. Start. It’s on the bottom left corner. On your monitor. Start. Click it. Go to Control Panel. Control Panel. It’s in the Start menu. The Start menu. It’s what popped up when you hit Start. No, don’t hit start again. Ok, hit Start again. Did the Start menu pop up? Then click Start. Now go to Control Panel. Control Panel. Click on it. Click on Control Panel. The Start menu disappeared? Click on Start. Ok, I’ll be over.

  1. You are an idiot. Here’s how you do it: Click on the Start button at the bottom left of the screen. Do you see a menu? Yes? OK. Now, do you see ‘Control Panel’ in the menu? Yes? OK, click that.

  2. Gotta go slow and assure with the user that what is supposed to happen happens after every little action. Had this same thing with my mom. I also forgot to plug the TWC router back in when I left one morning and my mom couldn’t use her VoIP phone (nobody else really uses the internet in the house but I forgot about that. I think she had just gotten it). She called during school and I had to talk her through tracing the cable and what to plug it in to and wait a couple minutes before trying. Good thing I know exactly what everything looks like and a couple things are even labeled, and well, plugging things in isn’t hard. It’s those colorful GUIs with buttons everywhere and the mouse that are really confusing.
