I guess the question is whether this is actually a fail, or somebody’s gag. I couldn’t imagine somebody thinking they knew what they where doing trying to do it quite like that.

Every mouse I have ever bought (since USB became common) has come with the adapter that does just that. I find it hard to believe someone with a PC that old doesn’t have at least 1 lying around.
