Wayback Wednesday: Mildly sexist Apple computer ad from the 80’s

Not only does he cut of the woman as she’s talking about the great features of the Apple computer, but he also asks if it can “put a lot of recipes in there, eh?”

The host of this ad is Dick Cavett and he was one of the original comedians who dealt in that dry, awkward wit that Flight of the Conchords has down to a science.

So no, this isn’t sexist. This is Classic Cavett, making himself look like a bit of a rube. (Good on him!)

I have to agree. I don’t see this as sexist. The woman turns the tables on the interviewer with one sentence at the end: “I also own a steel mill”.

Did you actually watch the ad? It’s obviously exploding gender stereotypes. Let me explain…see, because she’s a homemaker, he assumes that she deals with things like recipes, but in fact, she’s dealing with things like gold futures. Notice his surprise? How he asks her if she’s really a homemaker? I think you were on the wrong side of the FAIL Desk.
