WiFi stands for “Well, Its Free Internet,” right?

A few years back, I was working Helpdesk for a large international company and we started rolling more users into the Virtual “work from home” program.  One evening, I received a phone call from a user in Atlanta that was new to the virtual working program and had just received her company issued laptop.  She was having difficulties getting it connected to the internet, and hence, on the phone with me.

After checking the standard things, I went to verify that she actually had wireless, and the conversation went like this:

Me:  Can you go to your wireless router and power cycle it.  It could say Linksys, Netgear or D-Link and have an antenna coming out from it.

User: <Thick southern accent> Oh… I don’t have one of those

Me: But you have said you have wireless yes?

User: Yes.  I see a bunch of networks here in my apartment

Me:  Well ma’am you ne…

User: *Yelling* I CAN’T BELEIVE THIS!  WHAT KIND OF COMPANY ARE YOU?  SUCH FILTH ON THE COMPUTERS!

Me:  Ma’am?  What are you seeing…

User:  Well… I’ve never…. I don’t like this language, by have to read it to you.  It says “F*&K OFF GET UR OWN”

Me:  *mute* *Laugh*

Moral of the story, user thought that the wireless networks listed in her area where provided by the company so she didn’t have to purchase Internet Service.  And a neighbor labeled their network creatively and user thought it was us.

Much needed laugh after a long day in a call center.
