A patch was issued by Apple yesterday to address a major flaw in iOS. It was discovered when a user received a text message with a web link. The user, human rights activist Ahmed Monsoor, forwarded the link to researchers instead of opening it.
Clicking the link will lead to a malware installation. It’s the first known malware that can take over an up to date iOS device according to Citizens Lab. The infection allows for full control of the camera and microphone. Additionally it can log messages in chat apps and track location.
The update is around 40 megabytes, and took about 15 minutes to run on my 5S.
