ugh my old HP all in one printer did this… EVERY TIME I disconnected the damn thing for a while when I wasn’t using it.. then plugged it in again it reinstalled the drivers and added a new printer. I’ve also uninstalled plenty of software for printers that no longer existed in the home or office the ancient computers were in. I just did a search on the problem, though, and it seems it has to do with not installing it properly the first time.
The sad thing is I have seen something almost as bad as that. But with 3 printers that they hadn’t had for two years.
